"No matter how big and mean you think you are,

there will always be someone, somewhere, who is bigger and meaner."

- Dick Rankin, Scott's father

Angels Dance on the Head of a Pin, a debut novel by GlenScott Thomas Copper, tells the story of Scott, a boy who was nurtured by his grandmother, growing up with a sense that he and God were in a long-distance relationship facilitated by guardian angels who were always in attendance. Being spiritual beings, they occupy no space; thus, ten thousand could dance on the head of a pin. Sister Bernard, at his Catholic school, confirmed this. But right here on earth, numerous “guardian angels” had a hand in helping Scott and his girl, Willie, as they face a harsh Wisconsin winter alone in the wilderness, on the run from the law.

Incorporating a comic touch, and a keen eye for the beauty of nature, deft storyteller Copper offers a languid and profound tale of two young people facing the mysteries of life and love and heaven with the help of various “guardian angels” ranging from a geriatric great grand uncle criminal attorney to an indigenous medicine woman and her young apprentice. It is a rare story nowadays that is both funny and spirited, with characters that are a pleasure to spend time with.
