Train rides play an important part of this uplifting story, along with family tensions, supports, and tragedies; but it mostly tells how two young people come to depend on each other, alone together in a remote Wisconsin cabin in the middle of beautiful but challenging surroundings. Unknown to them, their indigenous neighbors have been silently watching from afar all along. But no one could guess what guardian angels would be needed next, as Scott struggles to become an honorable man.

“It is a book that lingers, sparking both thought and feeling, and leaves the reader with a sense of wonder that life’s greatest truths may dwell in the smallest, most delicate places."

“I "have never read such a phenomenal book in my life!!! Whenever I’d be reading it…I would tell myself, OK, I’ll put it down at the end of this chapter. But, like a tempting piece of chocolate, “Oh, just one more chapter … or two.” But then I hated to see it end. I so enjoyed [his] descriptions and metaphors and humor and…and…well EVERYTHING. …If not the best, then one of THE BEST BOOKS I have ever read. Kudos to you…for writing such an incredible book."
Kirkus Reviews
"Debut author Copper presents a novel about a spiritually searching young man in the 1960s Midwest. He thinks he might someday become a priest. He respects the power of words and … loves to consider spiritual matters…readers will find his thought processes to be intriguingly revealing and sometimes comical. …likeable protagonist experiences a wide-ranging adventure."

“Thank you for your courage to imagine, to shape worlds from thought, and to give language to emotions many feel but few can articulate.
Your words offer escape, comfort, challenge, wonder, and truth. You remind us that stories are bridges between hearts, and that even in
silence, creativity speaks loudly. Keep writing. Keep daring. Keep sharing your voice with a world that needs it more than ever. Your stories matter—because you matter.”
Clarion Review by Joseph S. Pete
“In Copper’s historical novel… a couple flees from abuse and tragedy. The cast itself is well fleshed out–
in particular when it comes
to their experiences of the
highs and lows of young adulthood.
They express feelings of wonder alongside their realistic anguish, and they muse through their adventures with nuance.”

“Set in the early 1960s, we learn about the history of La Crosse and environs, the geology of the Mississippi River, urban renewal in Chicago, rural life near Black River Falls, Wisconsin, and the Ho Chunk Native American Culture. I was particularly enthralled by the vivid descriptions of marshes, rocks, high bluffs along the Mississippi, and plant and animal life in the area. Scott lives in public housing and attends a Catholic school providing provocative glimpses of small city culture. As an Amtrak fan, my attention was also caught by the key part that trains play in the travel and commerce of this region.”
